To attract insects that will benefit your garden, plant heather. Bees like heather, and they get their nectar from it early in the spring. Plant a heather bed, it will house many bugs that are good for a garden such as spiders and ground beetles. With this in mind, be sure to prune your heather while wearing gardening gloves.

If little ones live in your home, consider including everbearing strawberries in the garden plot. Kids are quite eager to pick fruit from a garden, and will help with the planting if they get a nice snack out of it at the end.
